Neal Burgess, a semi-retired, middle-aged computer analyst from California, had just cashed in from a start-up company he helped bring to life. He bought the sailboat of his dreams and was enjoying his new live-a-board lifestyle in a small marina in southern Alabama intending to just kick back, relax, do some writing and focus on his zen practice. Life there was idyllic and blissfully uneventful until the day he met Cap’n Billy, a prototypical, downhome good ol’ boy who operated a small shrimping trawler along the inland waterways that lined the Gulf. Before he knew it he was spending almost every night shrimping with Cap’n Billy, literally learning the ropes as he went, and enjoying the never-ending yarns Cap’n Billy spun as they trawled. However all was not well in paradise. Cap’n Billy’s boat was in sore need of some basic maintenance and major repairs, and his license was under threat from the marine police. On top of that the sleepy little marina where Neal lived on his boat suddenly rose up in arms to challenge the rejection of a seemingly trivial building permit which was denied on the grounds it threatened the mysterious Perdido Key Beach mouse with imminent extinction.
Cap’n Billy is presented in a lively, colorful, first-person narrative which weaves seemingly disparate but curiously related threads from Southern culture, single-handed shrimping, predicative data analysis, zen practice and conservationism to create a rich and engaging tapestry depicting life on the southern U.S. Gulf coast.

Bill does a great job of defining the life of a sea captain. Lots of technical stuff here. This will be a great read for the nautically inclined.
I truly enjoyed it.....and I learned a TON of stuff......boating stuff, computer/data stuff, geographical Alabama stuff, and Buddhism/Zen stuff . I also enjoyed the straightforward writing style and terrific imagery brought forth - I could absolutely 'see' what the Captain looked like and I could sit right there for the meditation sessions and I felt like I was right there for that pool match.
I have never read a book before where the author did such a great job at describing each detail so well you felt you were really there. I liked his humor, logic and intelligence while making everything so easy to understand. I really think this book would be well liked by almost anyone, young or old whether you liked boating or not. I can't wait to read it again!!!!
The shrimper, Cap'n Billy, keeps his boat afloat with bubble gum and American Ingenuity. Laws favor large shimping conglomerates that can afford fancy, expenisive equipment. Cap'n Billy is left to twist in the wind while he spends all his cash complying with the various rules and regulations the government forces upon him.
The book is lush with interesting details about shrimping, boats and data mining and warmed the cockles of this nerd's heart.
Bill Smart has hit another home run with this feisty novel of the trials and tribulations of life on the river boat. The best of Mark Twain comes to mind as I read this warm-hearted and thoughtful novel.
Great little book cap'n bill. What a great first book. Unique mix of potentially unrelated subjects and characters such as zen, data analysis, the environment and fishing but luckily I've been exposed to everything except shrimping.
I remember reading Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance when I was in my 20s but learnt nothing about either topic. My son gave me a book on Zen and the art of golf which has been more useful.
I was fascinated by the insights into Alabama, the superb pen pictures, the life and universe philosophy and all in all just buy it, it's short and easy to read and I wonder what the author has in mind next.
Cap’n Billy is aptly named an odyssey. W.D. Smart takes us on a brilliant adventure down into the depths of Alabama’s Gulf of Mexico, between Mississippi and Florida and not far from New Orleans but worlds away from our experience. Serving us up a tasty gumbo that never fails to surprise, with nuggets from the author's Silicon Valley data mining treasure trove, reflective Zen teachings, and down home Cajun folk wisdom. This book seems to say, “awaken!” and then help us find out how.
Jason had his Argonauts, and Cap’n Billy has his team also… and they find themselves pitted against surprising foes. It’s not a stretch, perhaps, to have a government agency as a foil, but an environmental agency? Smart reading, and highly enjoyable! Note for the faint of heart occasional crusty language may surprise.
